SUSTAINABLE Planning considerations (Part 1 of 12)

Project planning is a key time where we can really make a difference in sustainability. By weaving in green practices, green ways of thinking, and green considerations from the get-go, we can create a blueprint for eco-friendly approaches that last throughout the project and hopefully beyond.

Throughout your various project planning sessions with your team and your stakeholders, please consider one or more of the following ways to incorporate sustainability into your project. The focus is on small, actionable steps within the project's scope that can contribute to overall sustainability efforts.

Planning Sessions guidance

1.     Project Overview

Introduction to the project's purpose and goals

• Spend time discussing and identifying how the project aligns with existing company sustainability goals

• Discuss the long-term environmental impact of the project outcomes

           Examples:

·       Consider the lifecycle of equipment, from production to disposal

·       Examine the impact of the materials used in manufacturing and explore options for a take-back programme for proper recycling at the end of the products' lives

·       Look at the long-term effects of reduced fuel consumption and emissions from more efficient transportation routes

·       Review how improved logistics might reduce product spoilage or damage, thereby decreasing waste

High-level scope overview

• Brainstorm ideas and opportunities to incorporate sustainable practices within the project scope

Corporate event project example:

·       Implement a digital-first approach for all event materials (programme, schedules, maps) using a custom event app

·       Partner with local, sustainable caterers who use locally-sourced ingredients and compostable serving ware

·       Set up a comprehensive waste management system with clearly marked recycling and composting stations

·       Arrange for carbon offsets to mitigate the environmental impact of attendee travel

·       Choose a venue with LEED certification or strong sustainability practices

• Look for areas where sustainable alternatives could be easily integrated

IT upgrade example:

·       Hardware Procurement: Choose energy-efficient models with ENERGY STAR certifications

·       E-waste Management: Partner with certified e-waste recyclers for proper disposal of old equipment

·       Cloud Migration: Move more services to the cloud to reduce on-premise server usage and associated energy consumption

·       Printing Solutions: Implement a secure print release system to reduce unnecessary printing and paper waste

·       Power Management: Install smart power strips and configure automatic sleep modes for all devices

·       Refurbished Options: Consider high-quality refurbished equipment for non-critical applications
