Critical Path
Official Definition:
The sequence of tasks that determines the shortest possible duration of the project. Delay in any critical task delays the whole project.
Layman’s Definition:
The critical path is the chain of tasks you can’t afford to delay — if one slips, the whole project slips.
Examples:
• Construction – Foundation Pouring: Delaying concrete delivery delays all downstream tasks.
• Event Planning – Venue Booking: problems booking a venue, delay all other tasks in the project (e.g., finalising invitations, booking speakers, etc).
• Software – Database Setup: Application development cannot begin without database infrastructure.
When to use:
When managing time-sensitive projects with dependent tasks that could delay delivery. Focus on the critical path activities to ensure on time delivery.
What it might look like in practice:
• Highlighted in a Gantt chart or project scheduling tool.
• Used to prioritise and escalate key tasks to avoid project delays.
